Mallorca is walking country, with waymarked long-distance trails, refuges and short family routes. Every distance and walking time on this page comes from the Consell de Mallorca, which maintains the paths.

## In short

The main hiking area in Mallorca is the Serra de Tramuntana. The GR 221 long-distance trail, the Ruta de Pedra en Sec, runs through it with a main route of 150.1 kilometres according to the Consell from Port d'Andratx to Port de Pollença in nine stages. There is also the GR 222 from Artà to Lluc and short family routes from the Consell de Mallorca, such as the Cúber reservoir or the Barranc de Biniaraix.

## Key points

- According to the Consell de Mallorca the GR 221 has 261.1 kilometres of open, waymarked paths, of which 150.1 kilometres are the main route.
- The main route has nine stages of between 6.7 and 27.8 kilometres, and the longest takes 9 hours 5 minutes.
- The highest point of the GR 221 is Coll de ses Cases de Neu at just over 1,200 metres.
- So far 54.7 kilometres of the GR 222 Artà to Lluc are open and waymarked, out of 134 kilometres planned.
- An easy circuit: Cúber, 4.7 kilometres, 1 hour 17 minutes and 45 metres of ascent.

## GR 221: the Dry Stone Route through the Tramuntana

The GR 221 is called Ruta de Pedra en Sec in Catalan, the Dry Stone Route. It crosses the [Serra de Tramuntana](https://mallorcaplaner.com/tramuntana/), a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape, and mostly uses old paths restored by the Consell de Mallorca. According to the Consell, 261.1 kilometres are currently open and waymarked. Of these, 150.1 kilometres are the main route from Port d'Andratx to Port de Pollença, and the other 111 kilometres are variants, for example via Galatzó, the Castell d'Alaró or Sa Costera to Cala Tuent.
The path comes down to the coast several times and climbs to Coll de ses Cases de Neu at just over 1,200 metres. The Consell says the climate makes the route walkable for most of the year. Note that the Consell warns of planned sections that are not yet waymarked and for which it accepts no responsibility. In stage 4, for example, the stretch through the Son Cabaspre residential area is passable but not waymarked.

## The nine stages at a glance

The table below gives the start, finish, difficulty, walking time and length of each stage as listed on the stage pages of the Consell de Mallorca. The Consell rates three stages as hard: Sant Elm to Estellencs, Esporles to Can Boi and Muleta to Tossals Verds. The last is the longest, with 27.8 kilometres and 1,111 metres of ascent. The Consell notes that it is quicker in the opposite direction because of the steep drop between Coll de l'Ofre at 900 metres and Sóller at 30 metres. The nine stage lengths add up to 148.4 kilometres, and the 150.1-kilometre total is the Consell's own figure.
With only one day, pick a single stage. Rated easy are Port d'Andratx to Sant Elm at 3 hours 20 minutes, Can Boi to Muleta at 3 hours 6 minutes and the flat final stretch from Pollença to Port de Pollença.

## Refuges: where to sleep

The Consell de Mallorca runs a network of hikers' refuges. Its website lists Pont Romà, Galatzó, Can Boi, Muleta, Tossals Verds, Son Amer, Coma d'en Vidal and the hostel at the Castell d'Alaró. Several are the start or finish of a GR 221 stage. Places are booked through the Consell's reservation system. No prices are quoted here, they are published there. If you would rather stay in one place and do day walks, see [where to stay](https://mallorcaplaner.com/where-to-stay/).

## GR 222: from Artà to Lluc

The second long-distance trail, the Ruta Artà-Lluc, is meant to link the Llevant hills in the east with the Lluc sanctuary in the Tramuntana. When finished it should have 134 kilometres in five stages and five variants. According to the Consell, 54.7 kilometres are currently open and waymarked, 47.9 kilometres of main route and 6.8 kilometres of variant. Walkable sections include the stretch between S'Arenalet d'Albarca beach and Betlem, the section from Betlem to Son Serra de Marina and the sections from Inca via Caimari to Lluc. The highest point of the route in the Artà hills is at 383 metres, and Coll de sa Batalla before Lluc at 578 metres.

## Easy walks and family routes

For shorter walks the Consell has described its own family routes, all starting and finishing at the same point. Not all of them are easy, so the Consell's grade is given for each:
- Cúber: a circuit of the reservoir, 4.7 kilometres, 1 hour 17 minutes, 45 metres of ascent, graded easy. The tarmac track to the dam, about 1 kilometre, is suitable for pushchairs.
- Barranc de Biniaraix: from Biniaraix, 5.0 kilometres, 2 hours 22 minutes, 421 metres of ascent, graded easy. The cobbled path is a protected monument.
- Puig de Maria: from Pollença, 4.2 kilometres, 1 hour 39 minutes, 270 metres of ascent, graded easy.
- Villages of the Sóller valley and Fornalutx: from Sóller, 10.3 kilometres, 3 hours, graded moderate.
- Talaia d'Alcúdia: from the Ermita de la Victòria, 10.2 kilometres, 3 hours 48 minutes, 598 metres of ascent, graded moderate. According to the Consell it is not suitable for children under 6.

More demanding are the Castell d'Alaró from the town of Alaró, 14.2 kilometres and 4 hours 53 minutes, graded hard by the Consell, and Puig de Galatzó via the Son Fortuny estate, 10.2 kilometres, 4 hours 40 minutes and 868 metres of ascent, which the Consell grades moderate and describes as not suitable for children under 8. The island of Sa Dragonera has three described paths, the shortest of which, to the Tramuntana lighthouse, is 3.8 kilometres.

## Summits, weather and safety

The summit of the highest mountain, Puig Major at 1,436 metres, is a restricted military zone. The second highest is Puig de Massanella at 1,364 metres. According to Wikipedia its summit paths are poorly marked above 1,000 metres and call for a good sense of direction and mountain experience, and the climb is not advised in bad weather.
The Tramuntana is much wetter than the rest of the island, and a few days of snow in winter are not unusual. For when the weather suits best, see [best time to visit](https://mallorcaplaner.com/best-time-to-visit/). The [map](https://mallorcaplaner.com/map/) shows where the starting points are. Guided walks are listed under [day trips](https://mallorcaplaner.com/day-trips-and-activities/).
