This is where you plan a Mallorca holiday, from the time of year to the last day trip. An independent travel site that names its sources and the date they were checked.

## In short

A Mallorca holiday comes down to three decisions: when, where and for how long. Swimming is best from June to September, hiking in spring and autumn. The island, also spelled Majorca in English, covers about 3,600 square kilometres, so it pays to choose one region as a base. The airport is eight kilometres east of Palma.

## Things to see

The cathedral, La Seu, in Palma, the Serra de Tramuntana as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011, the caves near Porto Cristo and Cap de Formentor: the main places, sorted by region, are under [things to see](https://mallorcaplaner.com/things-to-see/).

## Beaches

Mallorca has more than 550 kilometres of coast, from the long sandy beaches of the Bay of Alcúdia to small rocky coves in the east. Which beach suits families, snorkellers or people looking for quiet is shown on the [beaches](https://mallorcaplaner.com/beaches/) page.

## Towns and villages

The island has 53 municipalities, from mountain villages such as Valldemossa and Deià to towns such as Alcúdia with its medieval wall, and harbour villages. A selection with a short assessment is under [towns and villages](https://mallorcaplaner.com/towns-and-villages/).

## Markets

Many towns have a weekly market, and Palma also has covered market halls such as the Mercat de l'Olivar. Where each market is held is listed under [markets](https://mallorcaplaner.com/markets/).

## Hiking

The long-distance GR 221, the dry stone route, runs through the Serra de Tramuntana for about 150 kilometres, according to the Consell de Mallorca, to Port de Pollença. There are many day walks as well. Routes and the right season are under [hiking](https://mallorcaplaner.com/hiking/).

## Map

Mallorca measures 98 kilometres from east to west and 78 kilometres from north to south. The [map](https://mallorcaplaner.com/map/) shows what is where and what can be combined in one day.

## Activities and day trips

Boat trips, guided tours, wine tastings, cycling and hiking tours: bookable options by theme and region are under [day trips and activities](https://mallorcaplaner.com/day-trips-and-activities/). If you want to get out on the water, read the [boat trips](https://mallorcaplaner.com/boat-trips/) page first.

## Where to stay

City, beach, mountains or a finca in the countryside: the region matters more than the hotel. The search by area is under [where to stay](https://mallorcaplaner.com/where-to-stay/), and everything about a rural holiday is under [finca holidays](https://mallorcaplaner.com/finca-holidays/).

## Best time to visit and weather

According to AEMET, the mean daily high in Palma is 29.8 °C in August and 15.4 °C in January. July is the driest month and October the wettest. All twelve months are compared under [best time to visit](https://mallorcaplaner.com/best-time-to-visit/). The whole planning sequence is set out in [planning a Mallorca holiday](https://mallorcaplaner.com/holidays/).

## Frequently asked questions

### When is the best time for a Mallorca holiday?

For a beach holiday, June to September is the most reliable, with mean daily highs in Palma between 26.5 and 29.8 °C according to AEMET. For hiking, cycling and sightseeing, April, May and October are better. October is the wettest month with 69 mm.

### How long should a Mallorca holiday be?

A week is a good frame for a first visit: one region in depth and two or three day trips. Three to four days are enough for Palma and two day trips. With two weeks you can combine two bases, such as mountains and beach.

### Where is the best place to stay on a Mallorca holiday?

Palma suits city life and short distances, the north near Alcúdia suits long sandy beaches, the east coast suits coves and the Serra de Tramuntana suits villages and hiking. If you want quiet, look for a finca in the centre of the island. Choose the region first, then the accommodation.

### Do you need a car on a Mallorca holiday?

Not everywhere. Palma works without a car, and TIB airport buses run directly to several resorts. Trains link Palma with Inca, Sa Pobla and Manacor. For remote coves, mountain villages and fincas, car hire is the most flexible option.

### How big is Mallorca?

Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands and covers about 3,600 square kilometres. It measures 98 kilometres from east to west and 78 kilometres from north to south, and its coast is more than 550 kilometres long. The island has 53 municipalities and its capital is Palma.

### How much is the tourist tax in Mallorca?

Under Balearic Law 2/2016 the tax is 1 to 4 euros per person per day in high season, depending on the accommodation. From 1 November to 30 April it is reduced by 75 per cent. Children and teenagers under 16 are exempt.

### What are the main things to see in Mallorca?

The main sights include the cathedral, La Seu, in Palma, the Serra de Tramuntana with Valldemossa, Deià and Sóller, the historic train to Sóller, the Caves of Drach near Porto Cristo and Cap de Formentor in the north. Add to that the old town of Alcúdia and the Cabrera National Park.
