In short

Mallorca covers about 3,604 square kilometres and has more than 550 kilometres of coast. For planning, this guide groups the island roughly into six zones of its own, which are not an official division: Palma and its bay in the south-west, the Serra de Tramuntana in the north-west, the north with Alcúdia and Pollença, the centre, the east coast and the south. Palma to Alcúdia is about 51 kilometres in a straight line.

Key points

  • Mallorca has an area of 3,603.7 square kilometres and a coastline of more than 550 kilometres.
  • From Sant Elm in the west to Cala Rajada in the east it is about 96 kilometres in a straight line.
  • The Serra de Tramuntana is more than 90 kilometres long and up to 15 kilometres wide.
  • The airport is 8 kilometres east of Palma, about 47 kilometres from Alcúdia and 64 from Cala Rajada in a straight line.
  • Offshore lie Sa Dragonera in the west and the Cabrera archipelago in the south, ten kilometres off Cap de ses Salines.

Mallorca at a glance

Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands. According to the German-language Wikipedia it measures 3,603.7 square kilometres and its coastline is more than 550 kilometres long. The island lies between 39°15' and 39°57' north and between 2°19' and 3°28' east. Politically it is made up of 53 municipalities, and in landscape terms of six zones, the comarques: Palma, Serra de Tramuntana, Raiguer, Pla de Mallorca, Llevant and Migjorn.

Calculated from coordinates, it is about 96 kilometres in a straight line from Sant Elm in the west to Cala Rajada in the east, and about 74 kilometres from Cap de Formentor in the north to Colònia de Sant Jordi in the south. Two ranges frame the island: the Serra de Tramuntana in the north-west and the lower Serres de Llevant in the east. The plain lies between them.

North-west: Serra de Tramuntana

The Serra de Tramuntana runs parallel to the north-west coast for more than 90 kilometres according to Wikipedia, from the island of Sa Dragonera to Cap de Formentor, and is up to 15 kilometres wide. The highest mountain on the island is here, Puig Major at 1,436 metres. On the map this zone has Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller and its port, Fornalutx, Sa Calobra and the Lluc sanctuary. Port de Sóller is the only sheltered harbour on the roughly 80 kilometres of north-west coast between Andratx and Pollença. Routes are under hiking.

Palma and the south-west

Palma sits on the Bay of Palma in the south-west. The airport is 8 kilometres east of the city. Platja de Palma follows, running as far as S'Arenal. West of the capital come the resorts of the municipality of Calvià, on the map Magaluf, Santa Ponça and Peguera, then Andratx and Sant Elm. Off Sant Elm lies the uninhabited island of Sa Dragonera, 780 metres from Mallorca at the narrowest point. More under Calvià and Andratx.

North: Alcúdia, Pollença and Formentor

Two large bays open in the north, the Bay of Pollença and the Bay of Alcúdia. They are separated by the La Victòria peninsula with Cap des Pinar. The old town of Alcúdia sits on the saddle between the two bays. Cap de Formentor is the northernmost point of the island. Behind Playa de Muro lies s'Albufera Natural Park. Details under Alcúdia and Pollença.

Centre of the island: Raiguer and Pla

On the south-east slope of the Tramuntana is the Raiguer zone with the town of Inca, known as the centre of shoemaking and leather craft. Next comes the Es Pla plain, where most of the island's farm produce is grown. Sineu is marked here on the map. The highest point of the plain is Puig de Randa at about 540 metres, on the edge of the south.

East coast: Llevant

The eastern zone is called Llevant. The Serres de Llevant run from south to north and widen in the north to cover the whole Artà peninsula, and they are much lower than the Tramuntana. The main town is Manacor. On the coast are Cala Rajada, Cala Millor, Porto Cristo with the Caves of Drach and Portocolom. Capdepera is the most north-easterly municipality on the island. More under east coast.

South: Migjorn

The south, the Migjorn, continues the plain southwards. Its coast runs from S'Arenal to Portocolom. On the map this zone has Santanyí, Cala d'Or, Cala Mondragó, Es Trenc and Colònia de Sant Jordi. Offshore is the Cabrera archipelago, according to Wikipedia ten kilometres off Cap de ses Salines and a national park since 1991. More under south.

Reading the distances correctly

The table gives straight-line distances from Palma and from the airport, calculated from the coordinates of each place. Every journey is longer by road, and much longer in the Tramuntana because of the hairpin bends. Wikipedia, for example, gives 54 kilometres from Palma to Alcúdia and 72 kilometres to Capdepera, against 51 and about 68 kilometres in a straight line. Driving times are not given because they depend on traffic and season.

One rule of thumb is enough for planning: pick one zone per day. Which beaches are in which zone is under beaches, and the sights by region under things to see.
