Mallorca with kids: where to stay and what to do
Mallorca with kids is mainly a matter of short distances. If you stay close to a long sandy beach and plan two or three outings, you will have a relaxed holiday.

In short
Mallorca with kids works best with accommodation close to a sandy beach, for example on the Bay of Alcúdia in the north or on the east coast. For variety there are the caves near Porto Cristo, Palma Aquarium and the historic train to Sóller. June and September are milder than July and August. Children under 16 pay no tourist tax.
Key points
- Platja de Muro is 5.2 kilometres long and the adjoining Platja d'Alcúdia 3.4 kilometres, both with fine sand.
- Palma Aquarium opened in 2007 and is 500 metres from Platja de Palma.
- At the Caves of Drach the visit typically ends with a short concert by the underground lake.
- Mean daily highs in Palma are 29.4 and 29.8 °C in July and August, and 26.5 °C in June.
- By law, children and teenagers under 16 are exempt from the tourist tax.

1The best region for families
With children it pays to choose the region by its beach, not by its sights. Three areas stand out.
- North: on the Bay of Alcúdia, Platja d'Alcúdia (3.4 kilometres) and Platja de Muro (5.2 kilometres) run into each other, both with fine sand and clear water. Behind them lies the S'Albufera natural park. TIB line A33 runs from the airport to Alcúdia, and in summer the A32 also runs as far as Can Picafort.
- East coast: Cala Millor has a beach 1.8 kilometres long. The caves of Porto Cristo are close by. TIB line A42 links the resort with the airport in summer only, according to TIB.
- South-west: Santa Ponça and Palmanova in the municipality of Calvià are close to Palma and the airport. Line A11 runs there directly.
In the south is the natural beach of Es Trenc, with shallow, calm water. It lies in a protected natural area and suits a day trip.
2Beaches that work with children
For small children what counts is fine sand, few waves and a short walk from the car park. Besides the long beaches of the Bay of Alcúdia, these places fit:
- Es Trenc near Campos: white sand, dunes and shallow, calm water.
- Cala Mondragó in the Mondragó natural park near Santanyí: fine sand and signposted paths between the coves.
The full selection by region is under beaches. Always check the lifeguard flags when you arrive.
3Outings children enjoy
- Palma Aquarium: opened in 2007, 500 metres from Platja de Palma.
- Caves of Drach: the cave system near Porto Cristo with Lake Martel. The visit typically ends with a short classical concert.
- Coves de Campanet: a smaller cave in the north. According to the operator the tour takes about 40 minutes, which suits younger children.
- Tren de Sóller: the historic narrow-gauge train from Palma to Sóller, 13 tunnels included. From Sóller the tram continues to the port.
- Bellver Castle: a circular castle above Palma with a moat and towers.
- S'Albufera natural park: a wetland of about 1,650 hectares with many water birds.
- Western Water Park: a water park in Magaluf.
A short boat trip is also a highlight for many children. Bookable options by theme are under day trips and activities.
4The best time to go with children
In July and August Palma averages 29.4 and 29.8 °C, and July brings 346 hours of sunshine. That is swimming weather, but tiring for small children around midday. Plan the beach for the morning and late afternoon, and save outings to air-conditioned or shady places for the middle of the day.
June at 26.5 °C and September at 27.1 °C are more comfortable. According to AEMET, though, September already brings more rain, 52 mm on average. If you are not tied to school holidays, June is the best compromise. All the months are under best time to visit.
5Practical points for families
- Tax: the Balearic tourist tax is not charged for children and teenagers under 16.
- Arrival: the airport is eight kilometres east of Palma. Direct TIB buses to the resorts save you a change with luggage.
- Car hire: reserve child seats when you book the car.
- Rainy days: caves, the aquarium and museums are weatherproof. Ideas are under Mallorca on a rainy day.
- Prices and times: admission and opening hours are not given here because they change. Check them directly with the operators.
